Good Shepherd Classical Academy

Good Shepherd Classical Academy partners with parents in the sacred work of forming lifelong learners who pursue truth, delight in goodness, and cultivate beauty. Through a classical education rooted in the Catholic faith, we nurture wisdom, wonder, and rightly ordered loves so that each child may flourish and use their gifts for the glory of God and the building of His Kingdom.

Who We Are

Good Shepherd Classical Academy is an independent, private Catholic school in Baldwin County, operating in harmony with the Archdiocese of Mobile. We offer a classical, hybrid model of education that supports both the formation of the child and the life of the family. We are fully committed to the teachings of the Catholic Church and its educational mission.

Our Vision

We seek to form great saints — young people of wisdom, virtue, and joy — equipped to know, love, and serve God and neighbor.

Our Approach

GSCA seeks to provide a classical, content-rich education rooted in the liberal arts tradition and animated by the beauty of the Catholic faith and the fullness of truth found in Jesus Christ. Through the study and integration of literature, history, mathematics, Latin, sacred music, nature, and the fine arts, students are invited into the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty while developing habits of attention, discipline, wonder, and thoughtful conversation.Drawing from the classical tradition of the Trivium —grammar, logic, and rhetoric — the curriculum aims to form students who can read well, think clearly, speak truthfully, and love what is good. The life of the school is further enriched by the contemplative influence of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and by a deep reverence for the dignity of the child and the person of Christ.

Hybrid Model

The hybrid model is more than a shortened school week. It is an intentional philosophy of education built on the conviction that children flourish when parents and teachers work together toward a common mission. Our teachers provide expert instruction, thoughtful lesson plans, grading, and academic guidance. Parents continue the work of formation through the daily rhythms of family life, cultivating habits of virtue, wonder, and a love of learning within the home.By intentionally sharing the work of education between school and home, the hybrid model creates meaningful opportunities for parents and teachers to partner closely in each child's intellectual, moral, and spiritual formation.

At Good Shepherd Classical Academy, we believe parents are the primary educators and formators of their children. Our school exists not to replace the work of the family, but to strengthen it.

The hybrid model creates a genuine partnership between home and school. On campus, experienced teachers lead students through rich classroom discussions, hands-on learning, and the shared life of a classical Catholic community. At home, parents continue that formation through thoughtfully pre-planned lessons by their teachers, reading, narration, nature study, and family life.

Rather than separating education from family life, we seek to weave them together. This partnership reflects the Church's understanding that education is most fruitful when parents and teachers work together with a shared vision for the child's intellectual, moral, and spiritual formation.

Faithful Catholic families are called to live out their vocation in many different ways. While each family's circumstances are unique, all share the common desire to raise children who know, love, and serve God.

Our three-day academic schedule provides flexibility while preserving a unified, rigorous classical curriculum. Because our model is built upon active parent partnership, families may choose to collaborate in creating an optional fourth day of enrichment, allowing children to enjoy shared experiences in nature study, fine arts, practical skills, service, and community life.

Our goal is simple: to make a faithful classical Catholic education accessible to as many families as possible without compromising the integrity of our collaborative model.

FAQs

Classical education is a time-tested approach to learning rooted in the liberal arts tradition. It seeks not simply to prepare students for academic achievement or future careers, but to form them in wisdom, virtue, and love for what is true, good, and beautiful.

At its heart, classical education understands the child as a person made in the image of God and education as the cultivation of the whole person — mind, heart, imagination, and soul. Students are invited into a rich inheritance of language, literature, history, mathematics, music, nature, and the arts in a way that teaches them to think carefully, speak clearly, and perceive reality with attentiveness and wonder.

Classical education also emphasizes the formation of habits: attention, memory, discipline, humility, and thoughtful conversation. Through engagement with great books, meaningful questions, narration, memorization, and the study of noble ideas, students gradually learn not only to know what is good and true, but to love it.

Rather than treating education as merely the accumulation of information, classical education views learning as part of the lifelong pursuit of wisdom and the formation of rightly ordered loves.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based approach to religious formation that helps children develop a deep, personal relationship with Jesus. In a quiet, prepared space called the Atrium, children engage hands-on with Scripture, liturgy, and the life of the Church. They are invited to wonder, listen, and respond to God’s love at their own pace. CGS respects the dignity and spiritual capacity of the child and fosters a lifelong foundation of prayer, contemplation, and joy in the faith.

GSCA is a Catholic school that is faithful to the teachings of the Church while operating independently rather than directly under diocesan governance. There are many faithful and fruitful Catholic schools serving families today, and we are grateful for the role they play in our community. GSCA is simply another offering—one that allows us to focus specifically on a classical, liberal arts model within a hybrid structure.

This independence gives us the ability to:

  • Build intentionally around this particular educational model
  • Maintain clarity and consistency in mission and curriculum
  • Grow thoughtfully as the school develops

At the same time, we hope to remain closely connected to the life of the Church and to serve families as a fully Catholic educational option alongside other excellent choices already available.

In our first year, we intend to support families in accessing available homeschool-related CHOOSE Act funding ($2,000) where applicable. In our second year, we plan to begin the process of accreditation with the goal of becoming eligible for the full CHOOSE Act funding ($7,000) that year. We are building the school with this pathway in mind from the beginning and desire to make it as accessible as possible for families.

Our hybrid model is built on a simple conviction: parents are the primary educators of their children.

Students attend school on campus several days a week, where they receive rich, communal instruction in the classroom.

On home days, parents are able to stay closely connected to their child’s learning and integrate it into family life. This model:

  • Strengthens the partnership between school and family
  • Allows for deeper formation, not just academic instruction
  • Creates space for family rhythms, faith life, and meaningful time together
